Description
Icon "Saint Nicholas saves the ship from the flood" - hand-painted with 24-karat burnished gilding
The icon is made by pre-order.
The icon is painted on a walnut board in the shape of a fish - a symbol of Christ and the salvation.
The lateral parts of the board are covered with 24-karat water gilding, which gives to the image a noble shine and symbolizes the divine light.
In the center is Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, dressed in hierarchal vestments - a golden epitrachelion and omophorion, ornamented with crosses and pearls.
His face is calm and full of mercy, and a soft light emanates from his halo, illuminating the stormy sea.
With his both hands, the Saint saves a sailor, half-floated from the waves, whose gaze is fullfilled with hope and reverence.
Around them, the sea is dramatic - dark and rough, emphasizing the God's miracle.
The inscription is written in white color at the top of the icon, according to the Byzantine tradition.
The icon combines theological symbolism and skillful artistry. The golden fish from the shape of the board is reminiscent of the ancient Christian symbol ICHTIS (Ίχθύς – fish in Greek). This is an abbreviation for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior (Iesous Christos Theou Hyios Soter), and the scene of the salvation from the sea expresses the patronage of Saint Nicholas over all the people who travel by water.
